“You seem distracted.” Embry gives me a peck on the cheek while we get a handheld game console ready to see Trent. Today I will talk to him.

It was hard not to be distracted. All I could think about was the Ellery’s and Hazel. There was no way I would ever let Hazel fight. I would try to persuade the Ellery’s, but in the end, I knew they had a right if they wanted to do this. They gave up their daughter for this.

“Maybe a little,” I give him a peck on his cheek.

I loved being around Embry. He was always calm. Even when he was mad, he was calm. I’ve never met anyone like him.

He touches my cheek. “If you keep looking at me like that, you’re going to make me blush.”

I move his side bang out of the way, running my finger across the little scar coming out from his eye. “I enjoy seeing you blush.”

Trent notices us faster than he usually does. I know he would prefer if we never stepped into his hallway again, but it wasn’t like he was going to say that to the heir. Trent gives us a little wave as we make our way to where he is.

I sit back against the wall, letting the boys play the game. Trent smiles for real. I know this because I'm watching him, and I know which smiles are authentic and fake. This one is real, and I don't see it often. He doesn't know I'm looking. I'm watching him, and I'm watching Embry. Because I have to face the fact that things are about to change, I won't get this time back.

Embry. By the Gods.

I will give him one last night. The day before the battle, I'm to come up with something that will send him away for the night. He can't be in the Kingdom when the fighting starts. He has to be gone. I will tell him that I have a special surprise for him. That he should meet me in our sacred place. That's the excuse I came up with. He will go and find me not there. It will buy me time. If he's in here, someone might accidentally or purposely kill him. I won't allow that. I care too much for him.

“I might be thirsty,” I tell him shyly.

I've never asked for him to leave again when being with Trent. I see Trent's eye briefly peek up at me with dread.

Pausing the console, he gives me a peck on the lips. “I’ll be right back,” Embry says.

We wait until Embry is gone before we start to talk. He startles me again by being the first to do so. “What is in now, Annaliese?” I hate it when he calls me that.

“I'll get to talk to my family very soon,” I smile, his eyes lock on mine. “It's been over three years since I've heard from them,” I'm happy. Nothing can take that from me. Not when I know I'll be able to hear them again.
